Welcome to Year One Owls Class

This half term we will centre our learning around the theme of “Once Upon a Time.”

We will continue our learning in English with the focus on ‘The Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar,’ using resources from Grammarsaurus. We will then move on to our new story text, ‘Tell Me a Dragon’ by Jackie Morris.

This story will lead into our wider curriculum focus of History, answering the question, ‘How Have Toys Changed?’ The children will be learning about changes within living memory by exploring how toys have developed over time. They will also learn about important events in British history, including Remembrance Day and Guy Fawkes.

DT will look at structures and bridges, inspired by the work of the famous engineer and designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The children will explore different types of structures before designing and creating their own bridges.

In Maths, pupils will be learning about Addition and Subtraction within 10, with a focus on number bonds within 10. They will also begin learning about Geometry, exploring and identifying the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

In P.E. the children will be focusing on Gymnastics, learning how to control and move their bodies safely and confidently. They will develop their balance, coordination and flexibility, whilst exploring different ways of travelling, making shapes and performing simple sequences both individually and with others. PE days are Monday and Thursday for Owls. Please make sure your PE kit is named and kept in school at all times. We will send kits home at the end of every half term to be washed.

Homework books will be sent home every Friday and we collect them back in at school on Wednesday mornings.

Please make sure you listen to your child read daily at home.

Tapestry will be used to share practical learning, special events and homework. Please make sure you check the app regularly.
