At Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy we aim to ensure that all children can develop the skills they need to become happy and confident learners who, with guidance and support, can reach their full potential.
Our curriculum ensures that we deliver a range of topics across the age phases which develops sequential learning where pupils know more and can do more, ensuring that they are ready for their next stage in education.
Our nurturing ethos endeavours to support all children and their families. Through this approach we are able to work together so meeting the needs of all learners in our school.
We pride ourselves on delivering beyond the academic curriculum developing a child’s individual character. Our core values run through all areas of school life and learning which allows the whole child to develop into a confident and caring young individual. The Biscovey child shows respect, and through self-belief and courage approaches learning with an inquisitive mind.
‘With strong roots we learn and grow together’
At Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy, we value each child as an individual with a unique potential for learning. Our aim is to enable each child to participate fully in learning opportunities to become a curious and reflective learner.
We define curriculum as the totality of a child’s experience at Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ School. This includes not only what activities and learning they are immersed in but also the processes involved in how the child learns.
At Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy, we have developed a curriculum which is:
Engaging: Our aim is that children enjoy learning and approach all activities with a high level of engagement. Topics are chosen specifically to meet the interests of our pupils reflecting the background and experience of all.
Enriching: Our aim is that the curriculum is enriched in a variety of ways: trips; visitors; real world contexts; innovative, stimulating and inspiring experiences; cross-curricular links; purposeful use of the environment and local area; pupil and staff collaboration. All carefully chosen topics have a high quality text at the heart to promote language and vocabulary development of our young learners.
Unique: We recognise that not only is each child an individual but also each class and each member of staff have unique interests, skills and talents. Our curriculum is designed flexibly to meet the needs of these groups.
To ensure curriculum quality we have addressed the following:
Developing sequential learning where pupils know more and can do more
Local context and filling the gaps from pupils’ backgrounds
Considering depth and breadth and curriculum content
Ensuring exposure and immersion in high quality texts linked to topics
Having clear and focused opportunities for assessment
A mastery approach
Listening to the pupil voice
Reviewing and evaluating curriculum design
Clear curriculum leadership and ownership
Knowledge underpins and enables the application of skill. We strive for children to learn skills alongside knowledge from an early age, ensuring that both are explicitly developed. At Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy we see knowledge and skills as intertwined. The curriculum is about how we can ensure that pupils can achieve both knowledge and skill simultaneously. We do this by having an emphasis on cross-curricular teaching. We believe that this is important for making the curriculum relevant and meaningful to pupils and for putting knowledge into context.
We believe it is our responsibility to develop the literacy and numeracy skills for all our pupils. Using the Early Years Foundation Stage Strategy and National Curriculum as a basis, age-appropriate progression in knowledge for each core and foundation subject has been identified. This has been mapped out to ensure coverage of identified knowledge is secured across KS1. We carefully select the sequence of when, what and how knowledge is taught and subject leaders work actively to review this aspect regularly.
Curriculum content is grouped into topics. Each new sequence of learning begins with immersing the children in a high quality text launch the topic. From this questions are raised by the children and links are made between subjects. The topic is then further designed to engage the children and frame the learning journey linked to identify outcomes. Throughout the topic formative assessment against pupils’ starting points allows learning to be adapted. This is in turn provides the opportunity to lead the topic in directions relevant to the specific cohort.
During the learning journey, a range of objectives in several curriculum subjects are addressed. This content is sequenced to ensure that components of knowledge lead to conceptual learning. This analysis is supported by strong subject knowledge from staff and aims for both depth of learning and breadth of coverage. Curriculum planning ensures a layering of knowledge and concepts so that all pupils can make progress.
At Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy we intend that each topic will address key learning values identified as essential for all subjects.
Through our carefully planned topics and planning progression our children will increasingly become independent learners. The children will be taught the skills to persevere in order to master new skills, knowledge and concepts. With guidance and support they will be able to reflect on their learning and recognise next steps in order to develop as a learner, so ensuring that they are well prepared for the next stage in their education. Through skilful use of texts linked intrinsically to topics they will develop the skills in language to enable them to become confident communicators who can shared ideas effectively. By recognising the whole child in weaving our core values through all we do, our children will be able to recognise emotions, value each other and contribute thoughtfully to our Biscovey family.
