Science

Science teaching at Biscovey Nursery and Infants’ Academy aims to give children a strong understanding of the world around them. Outside visitors, trips and investigative field work develops their understanding of the uses of science today and for the future in real life contexts. Children are taught specific skills, vocabulary and knowledge to help them to develop their ability to think scientifically. The skills of scientific enquiry are embedded through sequenced lessons linked to overarching themes Each lesson is progressive and allows children to revisit, reflect and build upon prior knowledge. Through this approach, we aim for children to know more and remember more. In science lessons, scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and reinforced through high-quality texts. Children are immersed in languageenabling them to communicate their understanding of science effectively. It is our aim to nurture and develop independent and curious explorers that go on to investigate and question the world around them.

Both Nursery and Reception learn science through the natural world around them. The children play, discuss key vocabulary and ask questions to help them develop early enquiry skills. Having the outside space in EYFS allows children to explore the natural world around them further, children are encouraged to carry out independent exploration thinking about the key questions: What do you see? What do you notice? What do you think? What do you wonder? Children are then given opportunities to discuss their science learning with their peers and adults around them.
